Rare Edo-period shunga book blending sensual artistry with thought-provoking symbolism and metaphorical elements.  This unique volume includes an intricate and labeled diagram of a shamisen (Japanese three-stringed guitar), highlighting its cultural significance and metaphorical ties to harmony, passion, and human connection.  The act of "plucking strings" is a euphemism for stimulating desire, a common metaphor in Edo-period literature and art.

In the most striking scene, the book dives headfirst into semi-taboo territory, graphically illustrating the female anatomy while pregnant & childbirth with unflinching boldness.  These audacious depictions blur the line between eroticism and raw physicality, daring the viewer to confront the visceral realities of life and creation.  Far from conventional, this scene captures the provocative irreverence and spirit that make Edo-period shunga so iconic.
